Property Tax Relief for Elderly and Disabled Persons

This program provides property tax reimbursement for certain elderly or disabled persons and surviving spouses of disabled veterans. Reimbursements are given on all or part of the local taxes paid on property which the taxpayer owns and uses as his or her residence. These payments are made by the State of Tennessee as provided in T.C.A. Sections 67-5-701 through 67-5-704.

Approximately 374 county trustees and city collecting officials statewide assist in administering the program. Eligibility requirements are as follows.

Elderly and Disabled:

65 years of age or older or permanently and totally disabled by the last calendar day of the current tax year.

Own and live in the home for which application is made.

Income of all owners of the property must not exceed $10,550.

 

Disabled Veteran:

The veteran must have a 100 percent total and permanent disability rating from one of the following causes: A service connected disability which resulted in paraplegia or paralysis of both legs and lower body from traumatic injury or disease to the spinal cord or brain; or loss, or loss of use, of two or more limbs, or blindness (including industrial blindness.)

A combat related disability.

Being a prisoner of war for at least five months.

 

Surviving Spouse of a Disabled Veteran

Must have been married to the veteran who met one of the conditions above. Cannot qualify if remarried.

There is no income limit for a disabled veteran or a surviving spouse of a disabled veteran.
